2007 Edition

"Choices are the hinges of destiny." —Edwin Markham

2007We measure time with the clock marking seconds, minutes and hours; the passing of the month, season, year, decade and a life time. As I was beginning to compile this year's annual column, the image of a clock with the horoscope signs on it kept showing up. This is a clock in Prague, which has been in continuous operation for half a millennium. Astrologers used to use an instrument called the astrolabe to determine planetary positions. Part of the astrolabe made its way into regular time keeping. Just like the sundials that also tell us the seasons, this clock tells us the passing of the months and seasons in terms of astrological time keeping.

I used this year's quote in an earlier weekly column and decided to reuse it for the entire year. One of the words used for the angles of the chart in Hellenistic astrology was hinges. The meaning is pivotal issues in our lives. There are four angles in an astrological chart, the first represents our physical body, the second is our family and home, the third our relationships and the fourth our career or what we do in life—the issues in life we cannot escape. However, we can always adjust our choices to veer our life in a new direction. (Learn about the angles)

2007 Highlights

2007

I have been writing an annual column for the past fifteen years. The way I look at planetary energy has changed along the way. Since 2001, my predictions and thoughts on the year to come have been posted on my website. This year I decided to include a review of the outer planet energy. I will write a few words about these in the annual horoscopes, however, for those of you interested in the bigger implications read on. While this column has Astro-factors in it, the conclusions are still in plain English, but as many students of astrology read the column I am leaving some of the technical jargon in it. I also have extra blurbs on the astrology see links within text. If you are only interested in the predictions by sign, click on the links above to be 'transported' to the write up for your sign.

The adjacent graphic shows the major events for the year. This at a glance graphic readily shows where the emphasis by sign is for the year. (click on graphic to view a bigger version)

A summary of the major shifts this year:

The outer planets will not be changing signs this year. Pluto, now a dwarf planet, will travel through to the final degree of Sagittarius, which makes it personal for those born in the final four days of Sagittarius. Neptune will stay in Aquarius for several years yet and Uranus likewise will remain in Pisces. This year I have included information about these three planets. See table of contents below.

Saturn the planet of responsibility, obligations, limitations and lessons in life moves into Virgo September 2, 2007 for a two-year stint. Jupiter moved into Sagittarius in November 2006 and stays in the sign until December 18, 2007. Mars is retrograde beginning November 2007 in Cancer, Venus is retrograde in Virgo and Leo, and the Mercury cycle repeats from 2006, taking place in the water signs. Astro-data on separate page.

Introduction

Our personal year begins on our birthday. Astrologers cast a solar return for each year in order to look at the prominent themes for the year. The write-up here is based on the sun sign and if you happen to know your rising sign, I recommend you read that as well. If you need more information than the columns on the web and your newspaper can provide, I recommend you talk to a professional astrologer. In addition to offering personal consultations, I also have two astrological reports for your personal year. The reports are available directly on line or you can email your request and pay with PayPal (the rates are posted on the order page).

The highlights for the year include Venus and Mars retrograde, Mercury retrogrades in emotional water signs and we have Jupiter in Sagittarius, one of his own signs. For the past few years, I have written rather long annual horoscopes for the year, which is once again a theme. Remember I am generalizing because the write-ups are intended for the millions who share your sun sign, an astrologer can get more specific about your life once your date of birth, time of birth and location of birth are known. Open your horoscope.

Let's look at the outer planet cycles for the year first. 2007 begins with the three outer planets in the transpersonal signs. It has been this way for a few years now. Uranus is in Pisces (since 2003) and Neptune in Aquarius (since 1996), the two will continue to be in mutual reception until Uranus moves onto Aries at the end of the decade. What does this mean? Simplistically, the two share resources and have access to their own kind of energy. It is akin to sisters sharing clothes, lending money to each other and seeing the other's point of view. The similar themes we are experiencing now echo the 1920's but also the beginning of the industrial era.

Neptune and Aquarius—dissolution of perceptions

For the past ten years, Aquarians have been under the spell of Neptune, the planet of illusion, fantasy, spirituality and escapism. Think of a foggy landscape, the one, which on most days is familiar to you. Neptune is fog; it paints those dreamscapes and can make things seem surreal. It is not interested in rational, logical and pragmatic thought; rather it seeks to reveal what is beneath the surface. Neptune years can be about discovering our own spiritual nature or finding out how much we enjoy a drink or something similar that allows us to escape our mundane existence no matter how briefly. If you are thinking that this has no influence on your life, because your Sun is not in Aquarius, you need to remind yourself that all of the signs are in each astrological chart including yours. In a solar chart for a Taurus Sun, as an example, Aquarius sits at the top. That house (number 10) represents career, reputation, accomplishments and the public arena. This could have you thinking about how fleeting our accomplishments are and how they mean less to you these days… The theme goes on for fourteen years, thus the changes are subtle.

Uranus and Pisces—Questioning our faith

Uranus has been in Pisces for the past three years. Uranus is the energy of shocks, personal earthquakes and sudden disruptions in our comfortable routines. This energy likes to shake us out of our rut. We are supposed to feel alive! That is what Uranus represents. The energy is unpredictable, Uranus for example, seems to be very active when we fall pregnant or have to have surgery to remove our appendix. Thunder and lightning, that's the essence of Uranus. For Pisces Sun the past three years have brought abrupt change (from the perspective of others)—you may have shocked others by your choices and actions. Can you imagine how a live you might feel if electricity was coursing through your veins? Jeffrey Green coined Uranus the awakener. Back in 2003 I wrote an article about Uranus and Neptune, which is posted on my site— click here to read it.

Pluto and Sagittarius—Changing Convictions

Pluto in Sagittarius (since 1996) is at the Galactic Centre, which by the way is 'huge' and expanding. We try to pin point the exact location, astronomers and astrologers alike. Well, Pluto is rather tiny, thus it seems to me that whether it is at the edge or in the centre makes little difference. Pluto is magnetized. While Pluto moves through this stretch of sky, it appears to have more energy and wield a bigger influence. The god of the Underworld, Pluto, had little interest in the affairs of humans. I have likened Pluto to the septic tank, it bubbles up or backs into our house and we need to wade through its contents while enduring the stench. Pluto represents all the things we repress out of our experience and all those things we must eventually deal with—death, taxes, jealousy, betrayal, debt, etc. While the god of the underworld doesn't really care what we want, he has an agenda of making us transform by forcing us to let go of things that are not viable. Those born a few days before the Winter Solstice (December 21) are feeling the influence on your Sun. The Sun represents our ego, vitality; how we rationalize our view of life and everything in it. Does that sound like you might need to make some serious adjustments and changes? When all is said and done by 2008, your world will have changed. Note that if you have planets at the end of Sagittarius your worldview and personal attitude is also changing. Pluto is travelling through a sector of your chart regardless of Sun sign, where you are slowly making changes.

Pluto is travelling through the zodiacal sign of Sagittarius, which is associated with opinion, convictions, beliefs, religion, high education and foreign countries. Over the past decade, our world has changed rather dramatically, the cold war ended and terrorism entered the scene. Religion is changing, our view of the church and our perceptions of other faiths—maybe ten years ago we were only vaguely aware of other religions and now we simply know more…When a planet moves to the end of the sign we witness the biggest changes. A sense of urgency may enter the scene, as we collectively want to right all wrongs immediately. Pluto is associated with wealth, power and corruption. Sagittarius is the sign associated with opinions, expansiveness, exploration and expansion of horizons. This year Jupiter will be in Sagittarius until December. Great year for Sagittarians, but at the end of the year there are some interesting developments as Jupiter meets (conjuncts) Pluto.

Oh, I am well aware that astronomers have 'demoted' Pluto . The newspaper headlines screamed that Pluto is dead. While I use old, classical rulers for the planets, I do firmly believe that Pluto is a force not to be taken lightly. Maybe his role changed in they eyes of the 'collective', but I would not dream of telling Pluto that he has no influence on the inner percolations in our deepest crevices. I personally, have Pluto on my Ascendant via transit, and I happen to be a Scorpio. The energy may not have words that readily apply; however, the influence is profound.

Jupiter in Sagittarius—let's expand our horizons

Jupiter entered Sagittarius in November 2006. At the end of 2007 Jupiter conjuncts Pluto for the first time this millennium, we have about 8-10 of these every century. One of the richest men in the world, Bill Gates was born with the conjunction in Leo (October 1955). The conjunctions repeat at 12-year intervals in our lifetime. Jupiter, in astrology, is known as the greater benefic. In horoscope columns, the word luck is the most commonly used to define its energy. The word benefic is naturally the root word for beneficial, which means helpful and good for us. The other main meaning for the word is to do good deeds.

Jupiter is about expansion and growth—the bigger the better. Jupiter in Sagittarius grows and expands things we associate with the sign. Space exploration, religion, foreign cultures and goods, philosophy and exports are some of the concepts associated with Sagittarius.

In 1955, TV made an entrance to many a household; men wore Stetson hats across the western world and commercials paid for programming. We learned to crave the best! In 2006 computers and other electronic gadgets are miniature but hold far more information than we ever imagined. Our world is becoming wireless and telephone companies are competing against free website phone calls. We can watch TV off our computer while we multi-task interfacing with the world using a wireless keyboard and a monitor with resolutions that were unimaginable in the 1950's.

Jupiter is in Sagittarius every twelve years (not with Pluto though), that is in 2007, 1995, 1983, etc. For each of us it influences at least one aspect of our lives, making it grow and expand based on what we have seeded. Jupiter horoscopes are in a separate write up, click here to read them.

Saturn and Leo—lets not get too 'cocky'

The year begins with Saturn retrograde in Leo. Saturn remains in Leo until September 2, 2007 when it moves into Virgo. Saturn in Leo has the most influence on Leo Sun individuals. The Sun represents ego, vitality and our personal identity. Saturn represents limitations, body and restrictions. When the two energies meet, we have two enemies trying to find common ground. If you have Leo planets, you are being pushed to control, limit and/or structure a part of your life.

We've all heard the saying that someone needs to be taken down a peg or two. We are talking about false pride—Leo represents pride (by the way lions travel in prides).

The metal we associate with Leo is gold. When Saturn reaches the sign, we have a cap placed on the price of the metal associated with the sign. Gold has reached its peak. The advertisements about gold and bullion, recall the soothing voice of the woman saying how gold will always be precious… buy into it again in about nine years from now, if you want to watch it climb up the charts.

I will talk about Saturn more in the individual write-ups for the year. Saturn is in its detriment in Cancer and Leo, thus his bite can be something we don't expect. The rumour out there is that when Saturn gets into Virgo we will all be lining up for food. I doubt that, but I do think that at that point the price of bread and grains will be high. In terms of the market, grains and similar commodities are peaking at the time.

Saturn in Virgo—Let's change our diet and habits

Virgo is associated with the purity of food, harvest and finding the best ways to perfect things. About thirty years ago, bleached flower and highly refined foods began to enter the market place. Since about 2003, when Jupiter was in Virgo, we have all notice how the price of our daily bread has steadily climbed up. We are also beginning to see the results of tainted food. There is a theory that the food we grew up on is the best for us and when we continuously add new foods into our diets, we are upsetting a careful balance.

From mid-2007 for about two years, we will get an opportunity to work on our personal and collective habits. Virgo is the sign that analyzes what is, and finds ways to improve what is. The last time Saturn was in Virgo was 30 years ago, which takes us to 1976-78. People born during those years will have their first Saturn return. Astrologers call this coming of age and assuming responsibility for our own actions and choices. If you are interested reading more about what Saturn represents in your life, you might consider the Saturn's Promise Report by Stephanie Clement available in the order reports section of this website.

Saturn in Virgo is likely to limit our food supply, particularly the one linked to grains. Perhaps our food pyramid will change once again. As a child, I remember studying that pyramid that rested on our daily bread. The other concept we associate Virgo with is health, herbs, medication and preventative medicine. These concepts are likely to take concrete shape during the years Saturn travels through Virgo. Maybe research will show that traditional herbal medicines work as well as lab-created, man-made ones.

Venus and re-evaluation

"Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen." —Ralph Waldo Emerson

This year Venus spends six months in two signs of the Zodiac—Leo and Virgo— June 5 to November 3. The norm for Venus is to spend about 25 days in a sign. Venus will be retrograde for 43 days starting July 27 and concluding September 8. This period is personal for individuals born between September 22-25, August 7-11 and August 16-19. The same would apply if you had planets at the degrees activated by Venus, click here to read that information.

As the year begins Venus is a brilliant Evening star steadily approaching the Earth for a meeting on August 17, which marks the beginning of a new cycle; the evening star phase began 27th of October 2006.

During these Venus times, we have weeks on end (half a year this time) to ponder whether we are happy and content with an area of our lives. The question becomes more personal for Virgos and Leos, and naturally if you have planets at the specific degree. Are you happy with who you have become, what you do and how you interact with the world?

The individual horoscopes will address your area based on your Sun sign. The question Venus asks is do you love it? For clues to what Venus influences are likely to take place this Summer and Autumn, review same periods back in 1999, 1991, 1983, etc. always going back eight years.

Incidentally, my book, Venus, her Cycles, Symbols and Myths was published by Llewellyn in October 2007. Naturally, to learn more about Venus you want to read the book. I have listings of Venus placements by decades on my site.

I have a limited quantity of signed copies available. Visit my e-shop to purchase a copy.

The Celestial Courier

Retrograde dates: February 13-March 7, June 15-July 9 and October 11-November 1

Mercury weaves and zigzags through the Zodiac rapidly. He speeds around the Sun once every 88 days, which is the number of keys in a Piano. We associate this number with harmony or the scale of sounds perceptible to the human ear. Mercury plays different tunes and repeats his cycle with a unique pattern while tracing a six-pointed star around the Sun. We are now amidst a period where the element of water is emphasized.

The nuts and bolts

We have learned to pay attention to the retrograde periods, when things tend to go awry, especially with communication, travel and merchandising—the three key concepts that Mercury rules.

What to avoid in a nutshell: Signing contracts, entering into partnerships and buying equipment with wiring

Quick advice:

- Make a copy of your data—paper or disk
- Keep receipts together somewhere safe
- Opt for extended warranty for purchases, which come with wiring
- Be prepared for delays with payments, correspondence
- Keep Virus Protection current—these seem to increase during retrograde periods
- Be prepared to clarify your words more than once
- Don't trust rumours and do not feed them
- Take care of MAINTENANCE of appliances, computers etc.

Emotional Attachment

Water is silent unless agitated—we cannot truly control this element. It is invisible unless contained or contrasted by another element, and when placed in a container it evaporates over time. Frozen water is immobile, boiling water scolds while it steams up. Our emotions are much the same difficult or impossible to control. Water is not harmless, we can witness its force as a tidal wave or the rapidly flowing river that over time erodes rock and polishes the roughest surface smooth. We cannot stop water—it flows around obstacles. Water takes different shapes, the babbling brook, the mist in the air, the gently falling rain, the downpour of rain and frozen rain, the still pond, the raging ocean, tidal waves, and the force of the falls. We can harness the power of water, but like air, this is a difficult element to control.

This time we get five water periods, which repeat from, 2000-01. In 2008, the retrograde periods take place in the element of air once again. (From September 5 to 23 and October 23 to November 11, Mercury is in Libra.) With Air, we have ideations, Earth represents pragmatic work of Earth, the inspiration is Fire and now with Water, we get to look at how it makes us feel. No matter how great an idea, unless we feel emotionally comfortable with it, we cannot act on it.

Pisces is like the deep ocean, filled with information from the rivers and other waterways that terminate here. In the story of the little Mermaid, she becomes foam in the ocean to be washed away. In the Ocean, we unite. Pisces is the sign we associate with intuition, faith, and our fears. The months when Mercury is in this sign of his detriment, mere logic will not work, we need to develop faith and learn to trust our insights. Our world functions on 'facts and figures', logic and practical action. Now we are asked to explore a side of our innate nature that does not seem to fit well into the equation—the function of Mercury is deductive reasoning. (Mercury in Pisces February 2-26 and March 18-April 10)

Cancer is the tides of the Ocean, water that moves and washes away even the hardest earthy rock and mountainside. Cardinal signs are the action-oriented ones. We associate the Moon and Cancer with mother and nurture, but there is a more to this sign. How are your emotional security needs met in the area of your life represent by the house with Cancer on the cusp? Are you comfortable with how life is flowing in this area? Cancer is the sign that likes familiarity, and does not like to enter into any new setting without scouting out what is in it. (Mercury is in Cancer May 28-August 4)

Scorpio is like the deep well, hidden water in the deep, dark parts of the forest—here we enter the realm of deep intimacy and commitment. Scorpio can also be represented by stagnant water, such as pond with its hidden bottom buried underneath sludge and vegetation, branches and debris. Perhaps it is that undercurrent that we cannot see—just the elusive ripple on the surface of the otherwise still water. Septic tanks and sewer systems are Scorpionic; there is an element that does not belong mixed in with the water. Scorpio's task is to eliminate, purge, clean and re-emerge stronger without the elements that do not belong. Scorpio is about letting go, and the process tends to be intense as it takes on the element of life and death. What is it we need to eliminate from our thinking, and daily routines? (Mercury is in Scorpio September 27-October 3 and November 11-December 1)

Summation

With each elemental cycle, linked areas of our life represented by the houses come into play. Trinity of the elements is joined by trines. Trines are not action aspects, leaving us personal choice. The role of Mercury, just like any other planet, is to make us think and rationalize differently. If we do not engage in that activity there tend to be more events that are external. Mercury brings unadulterated information; we garble it and form our own perceptions. The element of water is not logical or rational; it is intuitive and senses things before they take concrete shape. People who have Mercury in water have high emotional intelligence.

The Mercury cycle of 7 years is one quarter of the Saturn cycle; also the duration Uranus spends in one sign. At age seven, we typically start real school. The progressed Moon travels through one quarter of the Zodiac in seven years. We talk about Mercury as the celestial messenger—heavenly courier—who takes messages from the gods and goddesses to each other. There were seven originally, our week is divided to seven and Mercury has his 7-year cycle. Is it not magical how the numbers and times link each together?

Stubborn Mars in Reticent Cancer and Inquisitive Gemini

Mars, astrologically speaking, represents our actions—think of all of the verbs (action words). In terms of our lives, there will be two linked areas, where you have to expend energy with slower than usual progress, and with the emotional fibers of your being stretched taut. The previous Mars retrograde in Cancer took place in 1992-93 and in Gemini in 1990. The last time Mars was retrograde was in Taurus October 1 - December 9, 2005.

What does this mean for us? Mars is retrograde mostly in Cancer and spends almost six months in that sign. This is a poor placement for Mars. Mars wants to do things, take action, motor on and does not care for being cautious. When Mars is in Cancer, we are more likely to take things personally and get upset about things that we normally take in our stride.

In addition, as Mars spends nine months in two areas of the chart, we have very specific issues we need to learn to address at length. This Mars period follows a long Venus one, thus first we spent months pondering whether we loved something and if it was truly worth the effort and dedication. Now we need to decide what kind of action if any we want to take in order to implement changes. Remember the quote for the year—choices are the hinges of destiny.

Back in 2003 when Mars came closest to Earth, I wrote a long article on that subject. Some of that information may help you understand this Mars cycle differently. I find that during Mars retrograde periods physical effort and working with metal implements is great for putting that energy to good use.

In terms of actual weather, we might see severe storms, lightning and erratic weather. Stock up with salt to melt the ice if you live in climates where snow is a possibility rather than a regular event. Make an emergency packet for power outages; it is difficult to cook without power or to keep the fridge stocked up. At the end of 2007, we have lots of 'chaotic' energy, which tends to produce anomalies.

In addition to spending almost six months in Cancer, Mars also ventures beyond the boundaries of the Sun in the first week of October and stays out there until late March 2008. We may not get the results we strive for but it won't be for the want of going all out. Just 'DO IT' becomes a motto. So of us will do so with abandon, throwing caution to the wind. Our actions may become somewhat exaggerated. What do you mean, "I can't do it—just watch me!" Because the energy is in such 'overkill' mode, it might be good to take note and perhaps prevent some of those pulled muscles or arguments that go too far. See additional astrological notes

The Timers of the Zodiac - Eclipses

Every Year we have an average of four eclipses. These occur near the lunar Nodes, which are in Pisces-Virgo. Solar eclipses take place at New Moon and Lunar Eclipses at Full Moon. North Node is linked to the Future and South Node to the past. This years eclipses repeat at the same degrees and dates from 1988.

Eclipses are the timers in our astrological toolbox. Note that eclipses are neither negative nor positive; they are simply timers that sound an alarm to alert us to things we have done our best to ignore. Alternately, they are timers to sound applause when we are doing what we are supposed to be doing with our lives. However, if an eclipse is within 2 degrees of a personal point especially applying, ask yourself have you been paying attention to your well-being? You can't go ignoring potential diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. indefinitely. Health matters aren't limited to the two I used in the previous sentence; rather I wanted to show that those two ailments are treatable. Eclipses are sort of a wake up call. Unless these points are active in your chart and other, previous planetary alignments have already brought issues close to the surface these may be a total non-event.

If you are looking for more information about your year personally, consider one of the two Solar Return Reports available online. These are written from your birthday to birthday. The one by Horacio Valescia is the most popular with my clients; the one by Mary Shea explains some of the astrologic behind the delineation. I added a predictive report, Starlite, by Gina Ronco on transits, which is like a personal horoscope, and I am getting many requests from my clients for this one. There are also natal reports available for your child, yourself, your relationship and the latest addition is a Karmic Insight Report. The reports are insightful but cannot replace a personal consultation with an astrologer.
