"Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue." -- Buddhab

Astrologically Speaking

April 2002 edition ...

The planets are lined up here and there, no big clusters and all of the planets are moving forward. The Sun moved into Aries at the Spring Equinox as it does every year. This is what marks the beginning of the astrological year. Aries is a fire sign, and a cardinal one at that. Fire is inspiration, explosion of energy, the kind that is needed for spring flowers to burst through the ground and be seen. Aries is known to move ahead without heeding caution, anxious to discover new things. Mercury is moving along in Aries as well until the 14th, speech and things related to communications tend to be more heated, more off the cuff - full speed ahead. After the 14th Mercury moves into Taurus, which is more sustained and controlled energy. Mercury is speeding past the Sun and once he is about 20 ahead, he'll start his second retrograde phase on the 14th of May while in Gemini. From a mercurial perspective the four weeks from mid-April to mid-May are the time where we get ahead of ourselves, and preparation for the review and re-do period, which lasts three weeks, now can spare you some of the agony of having to go back to the drawing board so to speak.

On April 1, 2002 - Venus moved into one of her own signs, Taurus. She is ahead of the Sun in Aries and as such an evening star, as she rises after the Sun. When Venus gets ahead of herself, after the superior conjunction with the Sun in Capricorn this year, she is moving toward her retrograde phase 9 months later. She is currently visible up to 3 hours at dusk. Venus is the evening star for nine months, and a morning star for nine months. It is interesting to note that this is of course the gestation period of human pregnancy. During the morning star phase Venus is known as star Phosphorus (radiant, bright, and glowing)[Etymology: New Latin, from Greek phOsphoros light-bearing] or Lucifer. She is feistier and more warrior like in her actions - the last morning star period started in April 2001 and ended January 2002, it coincided with the incredible upsets in the market place - stocks, bonds, etc.

On January 14, 2002 following the superior conjunction Venus became the evening star. As an evening star she is known as Hesperus [for rises from the west, or after sunset]. There are propositions that earlier astronomers thought that Phosperus and Hesperus were two different stars or planets. The evening star has a different tone to the morning star, it paves the way for the Sun to follow, it appears to, astrologically speaking, plant a seed that the morning phase of this brilliant planet, can bring to fruition. Venus as the morning star is the young maiden, who can leave caution to the wind, whereas the evening star is like a wise woman, thoughtful and guided more by instinct that rational thought.

Both Venus and Mars start the month of under Taurus energy, that of mother Earth, it is sustenance and form. Goddess Venus in Taurus likes to see concrete results, she likes to see people in their gardens weeding out and making room for the flowers of spring. Mars has been travelling through Taurus since March, so we have double the energy of Taurus. The Sun joins the two at the end of the month.

Earth signs are steady more suited for the marathon, energy is conserved and actions contemplated and considered before taken. Taurus likes to go at a steady pace, and cannot be pushed into action until it is good and ready. Taurus expects things to be easy, to roll along smoothly and if they things do not, Taurus becomes sulky wondering why is it easy for everyone else but me. Taurus energy can sometimes feel like molasses in its motion, cannot move until every t is crossed and every I dotted, hence even this column is late... Taurus represents energy that slows us down so that we take the time to give ideas, plans and other notions time to take shape before taking action.

Venus is the also the planet of music and food as well, a perfect month for preparing those meals with love and care, and playing harmonious, and melodious music. It is interesting to note that there are a lot of music sites called Hesperus.

I have been side tracked to do a lot of revisions on the web-sites I look after, writing this column was on the back-burner until the task at hand was complete. I have re-discovered the obsession that is in Vesta, the asteroid. Vesta we know is about keeping home fires burning, she kept the flame burning in Rome, and this regarded as representing the fact that Rome was eternal.

Planets as well as asteroids become more than active when we have prominent transits to them. For me it has been the transiting nodal axis forming a T-square to my natal Vesta, which is prominent at the zenith of my chart. Well, it has caused me to re-assess how potent her influence is. It is ultimate self-control and disciplined effort, and boy is she creative but in ways that take into consideration attention to detail, laying a proper foundation. I have spent hours shaving off seconds of web page load time. I have learned to read html code and to write it. Not over weeks, months and years but over days obsessing over the minutest details. I give credit to the Vesta energies in my personal chart.

We all have Vesta in our charts - it is very obsessive energy giving incredible focus, just a little asteroid, well, I no longer think so. It is also to do with health, our tolerance of things we eat and inhale. Her mythological parentage is Cronus, Saturn and the elder sister of Zeus, Jupiter. Both parents have a strong link to teaching and learning, the two sites I have are to do with special education, education in astrology.

Vesta is an incredibly fastidious worker, I recall a decade ago working hard to learn computerized accounting, and staying busy and focused. At that time I didn't even find the time to look up where the progressed planets in my chart were. Progressed planets refer to how we are maturing, a day in the ephemeris represents a year of life. That is if you were born with Sun at 15 of Gemini, for example, at age 1 it would be at 16 and by the time you turn 15 it would change signs. Progressions into new signs represent major shifts in our lives. The planet that moves the fastest is the Moon, and thus it also progresses the fastest. Every two and a half years the Moon changes signs by progression. A long explanation to state that when the progressed Moon sat on Vesta by conjunction nothing not even my love of astrology could break my concentration in learning something new. Talk about obsession.

If you don't have an astrology program that calculates asteroid positions, check out Starlite, a free shareware program from Kepler, which does give the positions of major asteroids.

For me Vesta is in the 9th house and that is a house where we learn and explore new things, the story of my life. Where might your story with Vesta be - here is quick run through the houses:
