The Celestial Courier 2008

"Let no sleep fall upon thy eyes till thou hast thrice re- viewed the transactions of the past day. Where have I turned aside from rectitude? What have I been doing? What haveI left undone, which I ought to have done? Begin thus from the first act, and proceed; and, in conclusion, at the ill which thou hast done, be troubled, and rejoice for the good." -- Buddha

Retrograde Timelines: Jan 28 - Feb 18, May 26 - June 19 and September 23 - October 15

Mercury weaves and zigzags through the Zodiac rapidly. He speeds around the Sun once every 88 days, which is the number of keys in a Piano. We associate this number with harmony or the scale of sounds perceptible to the human ear. Mercury plays different tunes and repeats his cycle with a unique pattern while tracing a six-pointed star around the Sun. We are now amidst a period where the element of air is emphasized.

To do or not to do that is the question. Mercury rules all types of mundane, routine things in our life and is associated with our daily schedules and all that stuff we normally do without having to think about it; by rote. Most of us don't have to concentrate on making a pot of coffee, tying our shoe laces or answering correspondence or focus too much on any of our routines; we often boast that we can perform these types of functions blind-folded and with one hand tied behind our back. See Mercury retrograde Calendar.

The nuts and bolts

We have learned to pay attention to the retrograde periods, when things tend to go awry, especially with communication, travel and merchandising-the three key concepts that Mercury rules.

What to avoid in a nutshell: Signing contracts, entering into partnerships and buying equipment with wiring

Quick advice:

- Make a copy of your data-paper or disk
- Keep receipts together somewhere safe
- Opt for extended warranty for purchases, which come with wiring
- Be prepared for delays with payments, correspondence
- Keep Virus Protection current-these seem to increase during retrograde periods
- Be prepared to clarify your words more than once
- Don't trust rumours and do not feed them
- Take care of MAINTENANCE of appliances, computers etc.

Note life goes on regardless of Mercury Rx periods. Old offers may return, maybe even new ones, they may not lead where you anticipate, but turning down a great offer just because Mercury is retrograde makes no common sense. If you received a marriage proposal during this time, would you accept? Would the marriage last? Why shouldn't it? The date of marriage once again might need to be changed, maybe brought forward.

Intellectual Stimulation

Mercury spends extra time in the Element of Air

The cycle re repeats from, 2001-02. I wrote about that back in 2002, review the old article. The longer listing of the Mercury cycle is available as a PDF file. We had the emotional attachment of Water in 2006-07 and now return to the ideations of Air, which will be followed by the pragmatic work of Earth in 2010-11 with the inspiration of Fire to follow.

Mercury spends 204 days in the element of Air this year, which only leaves 162 days for the remaining nine signs. The children born this year are a logical bunch collectively, to think differently from the rational, linear thinking that is Air, will be an exception for this year's babies.

The Mercury write-ups for the year appear in the annual horoscopes for the 12 signs. For example Mercury breezes through the fire signs in about two weeks each this year. The listing is at the bottom of the page.

The concepts that belong to the element of air are ideas, learning, logic, rational and linear thinking; relating, speaking, mental stimulation and a lot of talk less action. In 2008 we can have a delightful time playing out those 'what if' and 'why not' scenarios. Works particularly well for the masculine Air and Fire signs.

What this period is great for... CATCH UP

The key prefix for Mercury retrograde periods listed above is RE. That is re-do, revise, review, revamp, and reconnect as well as all action words that can have the prefix added plus of course, my favourite, REPAIR. Mercury is also paperwork thus it is a great time to haul out that manuscript, proposal, the Last Will you have been meaning to deal with, and other documents and go over them with a fine toothed comb and polish these up. Naturally these should not be signed until Mercury is acting normal again; after the last date for each period.

Summation

With each elemental cycle, linked areas of our life represented by the houses come into play. Trinity of the elements, which are joined by trines, joins these. Trines are not action aspects, leaving us personal choice. The role of Mercury, just like any other planet, is to make us think and rationalize differently. If we do not engage in that activity there tend to be more events that are external. Mercury brings unadulterated information; we garble it and form our own perceptions.

The Mercury cycle of 7 years is one quarter of the Saturn cycle. It is also the duration Uranus spends in one sign. At age seven, we typically start real school. The progressed Moon travels through one quarter of the Zodiac in seven years. We talk about Mercury as the celestial messenger-heavenly courier-who takes messages from the gods and goddesses to each other. There were seven originally, our week is divided to seven and Mercury has his 7-year cycle. Is it not magical how the numbers and times link each together?
