Scorpio

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

The significant shifts in planetary energy began during the past four months, and we have many more to come. 2007 was a challenging year for many of us. When long cycles reach the final degrees in a sign, we feel a sense of urgency to complete EVERYTHING on our list. This naturally isn't doable, no matter how much we would like to conclude everything. In the last six-seven weeks of 2007, most of us became too busy to attend to everything, and that, which entered our lives since September, was emotional in nature and now we needed to learn practical ways of handling issues. In astrology, there are short cycles and extremely long ones—many are changing now, and the more changes we have in the stars the more changes we will have in our lives. Is it a curse or a blessing, when we are wished: "may you live in interesting times"?

Since September 2007, we have all felt 'stuck' somehow. Our experiences are all unique and different. Some of the potential events and issues, including dealing with family members and housing related issues more. Perhaps we have needed to rely on assistance more than we are accustomed. Organizing a trip, procuring insurance, dealing with an insurance claim or the loss of a family member are some of the issues that figure prominently now. Some of us are luckier, and we have only had to deal with the furnace seizing up on us, the hot water heater that no longer works, the washer and dryer, the fridge—anything that has a motor and deals with water.

Your ruling planet is Mars. During the times, Mars is behaving against the norm and spending extra time in a sign can be extra frustrating for you. The world is moving at the speed of molasses or conversely you find it almost impossible to stick to your deadlines and schedules. You'd rather be doing something else. I wrote an article about Mars earlier this year. As a fellow Scorpio (obsessive-compulsive is my middle name), I find it useful to find an activity that allows me to channel that energy. This time it is quilting—if, one of my friends had told me that's what I'd be doing, I wouldn't have believed it! The last time it was knitting (I prefer to buy rather than make, by the way). Made a few gorgeous woollen sweaters back then, about to ‘toss' them out (allergic to wool). The point is that both activities require the use of metal tools, which are the domain of Mars. It is very relaxing to knit, to quilt, etc. Working on quilt number three, actually I'd rather be quilting than writing the horoscopes.

Mars was in Cancer from September to the end of the year, and changed direction mid-November. For Scorpio this is associated with publishing, law, convictions and gaining higher knowledge. You may have been battling for your rights or the rights of another, learning something new and pondering what you would love to have in life. Now that Mars has returned to the sign of Gemini, you are probably working hard to catch up with things related to resources, taxes, accounting, fixing up insurance matters and obsessing about all the things you did not have time to complete in 2007. You may also have been dealing with health issues. These could be to do with teeth (extractions, root canal, etc.) or maybe you need to find a way to balance your diet, or perhaps you could use a bit of relaxation in your life.

Mars is retrograde in Gemini, as the New Year begins. It is regressing (going back in time…) into the sector for Aquarius associated with children, creativity and romance. You know that you have tons of things on hold with work, chores and obligations but for now, you are dealing with other things. Some typical comments include continuous distractions, needing to drop everything you do to respond to the needs of another. Perhaps you have frequent requests such as can you find out for me, can you help me get this done, or perhaps you are looking after a friend or a family member in need of care. Chances are you have more on your plate than you can handle comfortably. Remember that from March to May you will be playing serious catch up but with a different mindset than during the latter part of 2007, which has been rather 'stressful' for many of us.

Have you taken on too many things? Did you over commit by taking on too many obligations and responsibilities? When planets move against the norm, the issues they represent are 'in our face'.

Many of us have made statements such as 'I no longer want to do that or I REFUSE. This energy can be over reactive, meaning that we get upset over little things that aren't worth the effort of losing our control. Until early March, we have the opportunity to find intellectual, rational, logical choices to set on a different course through the maze of life. During January, we need to revisit past ideas, talk to our friends, children and partner about the most pressing issues and this time with an intellectual mindset not from a place of emotional turmoil.

Similar energy was in play from August 6 to September 28, 2007. The repeats typically take place once every two years; this period is an exception. The feelings we have been having for the past 2-3 months need to be addressed. If something is making you feel unhappy, emotionally alone or alienated, you need to speak up. There is that saying: Doing the same thing 'over and over again' and expecting the same results is insanity. Until March 4, you have the opportunity to revisit those issues and tackle them differently. Then from March 4 until May 9, you will be able to handle work/obligation matters differently. Are you doing what you love, and what will you eliminate this year so that you can concentrate on your dearest aspirations and goals?

As the year begins, a new element enters the equation: logic, paper work, seeking professional advice, speaking to a counselor, attorney, adjuster, etc. The first two weeks of the year are intense, it is easier to get into arguments as we 'fight' for what is just and fair. On December 18 when Jupiter moved into Capricorn (Mercury and Sun followed by the 21 st ) we all got a glimpse of what direction we need to take. Granted most of us became aware that it will take time, patience and working toward our goals patiently and methodically.

Pluto of change and transformation enters Capricorn this year. The preview period is January 25-June 13, and November 2008 begins 14-year main feature. For Scorpio this takes place in the area of communication and daily routines/schedules. The energy of Pluto is INTENSE and the energy of Scorpio is Intense . You are likely to feel this shift, you don't particularly like change, and that is what this dwarf planet's energy represents—profound change. What new do we get to obsess with now? It has been money, investments and resources for the past 12 years. We got rather used to that. We might have changed the way we earn our income, became more aware of investments and our priorities shifted. So here we go again, we might not know what needs to change, but do know that there are things not to your liking.

Life is short and you plan to live it on your terms. Now Pluto of change, elimination, rebirth and 'fate' is shifting gradually into the sign of business, societal norms and ambition, Capricorn (dates above). If we observe, what people are busy doing every year this time we get strong clues as to what the planetary influence is most likely to bring us.

Every year when many planets are in Capricorn (Dec 21-Jan 20), people seem to do a big purge around their homes—in with the new at Christmas and out with the old after Boxing Day. When the planet known for its ability to eliminate, to make redundant moves in Capricorn, purging things and people, who have outlived their usefulness can become a strong theme.

This year it is all rather a double-whammy for us Scorpios. Mars is aggravating and Pluto isn't holding steady for us, so we may be able to balance things only to an extent, which isn't easy for us Scorpios. Finding an activity that is relaxing to you (mine is quilting for now) might help channel some of that creative energy that is hidden within the active doing energy that is Mars.

Pluto in Capricorn for Scorpio is linked to siblings, education, acquiring knowledge, writing, travel and communication. It is also associated with our neighbourhood, daily environment and new ideas. Everything needs to be addressed pragmatically, within the laws of society and it all takes extra time. This influence lasts for 14 years; the adjusting time is 2008-09. You might decide to return to school, begin teaching, change neighbourhoods, restore your residence or relocate. Your thinking will be the one thing that will be altered the most during these years. In the short-term, i.e. this year, pay extra attention in traffic; remember to do maintenance on your vehicle, computer, etc. at regular intervals.

Saturn moved into Virgo back in September and lasts until mid-2010. This for you influences plans for the future, gains and friendships. Saturn helps us limit and find a focus for our effort. The upside of this influence is that when all is said and done, you are headed in a practical, well-analyzed direction. Some things flow with incredible ease, you are likely to earn more this year than last year. However, if your expectations are unrealistic, you feel 'let down'. It is all about attitude. Making affirmative decisions can be challenging during the times Saturn moves against the norm; this year that is until May 2 and since December 19, 2007. The repeat is from New Year's Eve 2008-until April 2009. This influence helps you guard against choices that are not in your best interest quite naturally. However, during 2008-10, you will have many unforeseen opportunities, and if you plan for those what if scenarios, you will be in a great position to seize the opportunities. On a personal note, you are likely to worry about your children and people who are like your own children, more than usual. To them you are the elder and the wise one, but you need to offer advice in terms of choices and options, rather than the one course of action.

The timing cycle for the direction in our lives shifted into the sign that represents home and family for you; this lasts through mid-2009. The eclipse cycle follows this cycle of the Nodal Axis. February and August are the eclipse months. The New Moon at the beginning of February (6 th ) is an eclipse, which repeats from 19 years ago (1989). Old opportunities and/or meeting new people we feel we have known all of our lives are likely around that date. The Universe provides us clues about how to proceed through external events. This cycle divides our lives to 4-5 complete, repetitive cycles. During this time your family and/or housing situation is likely to change. Some of it is in part due to changes at or with work; the other might be new family members.

By May 2008, the wonderful potential of this year opens new doors for you. Until that time, the planetary weather can feel somewhat unpredictable.

During 2008, Jupiter of abundance is in Capricorn with Pluto, which emphasizes your desire to eliminate things in your life that inhibit your enjoyment of your daily environment and activities. Jupiter brings expansion into our lives, for Scorpio new activities and new interests (the need to be practical). Because Pluto and Jupiter are dancing in the same sign bulk of the year, the energy is more volatile.

Whatever big plans or choices you made in the summer of 2004, could bring amazing results in September. The reminders are likely to come in May-June; listen to your intuition or get friends to help you remember what was so important to you back then.

Handling Issues with Logic

As the year begins, a new element enters the equation: logic, paper work, seeking professional advice, speaking to a counselor, attorney, adjuster, etc. The first two weeks of the year are intense, it is easier to get into arguments as we 'fight' for what is just and fair. On December 18 when Jupiter moved into Capricorn (Mercury and Sun followed by the 21 st ) we all got a glimpse of what direction we need to take. Granted most of us became aware that it will take time, patience and working toward our goals patiently and methodically.

This year the Mercury cycle is in the element of air, as in 2001-02. For you, these cycles influence endings and new beginnings. The emotional theme of 2006-07 gives way to handling matters more rationally but the 'playground' is still rather emotional. This approach may not feel particularly comfortable. While it is a year of new ideas and we can have a delightful time playing out those 'what if' and 'why not' scenarios; every decision means surrendering something you think you should continue to hold onto.

This year Mercury is in your own sign for three weeks in November, but spends 204 days in signs associated with family, shared resources and isolation/subconscious realm. This is wonderful if the mysteries of life fascinate you, not so great if you already know that there are many outstanding issues with family and resources.

Mercury is in Aquarius (Jan 7 - March 14), which for you represents home and family this is a long time, and the last time we were here was back in 1995 (prior to that 1988, 1982, 1975, 1969). So, 13 years ago, for the first two months of the year, what were you busy launching? Back then, Pluto was changing as well. Thinking back can bring back incredible revelations about the power of little Mercury. Perhaps each time the family has needed you to make changes in order to accomplish common goals. In hindsight, these couple of months can be rather profound. In the midst of it all, talk to family, discuss possibilities and share your aspirations. Two heads are better than one. Yes, you will need be detached and listen. Offer advice with care; remember what is typically expected of you—rational solutions and the truth.

There will be shorter rerun about the same time in 2009. However, the ones with this intensity repeat rather seldom.

From May 2 to July 10, Mercury is in Gemini; there will be shorter rerun about the same time in 2009. Back in 1995, you likely started something new to procure more fiscal security, in the course of Autumn (2007) and Winter, Spring of 2008 you reviewed these matters with intensity. Now you need to implement some of these changes, find information, do your research and get things on track. The financial markets should be more settled now, with fewer disruptions, which should make choices and options somewhat easier to find. During this time, particularly when Mercury is retrograde (see dates below), beware how you communicate your ideas, thoughts and solutions. You know how adamant you can be. Pay special attention to your most intimate relationship, discuss things openly and honestly—create better rapport, which will make you feel more content with life.

During May, you can be more 'reckless' about money, spending it and/or you might be tempted to have an affair. You might take risks without considering the outcome from different angles, or you might tell everyone who will listen exactly what you think without mincing your words or saying it without much tact or diplomacy. Think carefully before acting.

From Aug 28 - Nov 4, Mercury is in Libra, which for Scorpio represents the inner world, the sum total of our desires and fears. This is the time to contemplate issues that are not visible, the motivation within us. It is said that the only thing that prevents us from achieving everything we wish is fear. Both fear of failure and fear of success are very real to people. While this is the time we love to retreat, spend quality time with our thoughts and prepare for a new personal year, finish off things and clear the deck for the new; it is also the time when the World and people in it beckon us the most. Everyone seems to want a 'piece' of you, you resourcefulness and insights are in high demand.

September is another, potentially, wonderful time for romance. Holding secrets this year might be hard, especially your own. You typically forget the ones by others, unless you might benefit from remembering. Your energy levels may be rather low until your birthday (from September onward), ensure you have time for yourself now.

This year holds the potential for extra income, depending on what activities you began in 2006-2007, and the choices you make along the way. It is important to listen to your intuition this year. It is working overtime; perhaps you should pick up a book on dream symbolism (or symbolism) in order to unravel some of those cryptic messages we receive through our dreams.

Summary for 2008 from the first column of the year

The year launches with a 'back to work, sort though backlog and finish projects' theme. You will still get to revisit those people issues in the Spring. It is a year of endings and new beginnings, at times in reverse order. Family and financial matters continue to hold added importance, but this year it is easier to find rational, practical solutions. All your plans are long range and you work hard toward your personal goals and aspirations. You've never liked casual conversations, from here on out, you won't even engage in them—everything has more profound meaning as your daily life begins changing.

Want to know more about your Year

Our personal year begins on our birthday. Astrologers cast a solar return for each year in order to look at the prominent themes for the year. The write-up here is based on the sun sign and if you happen to know your rising sign, I recommend you read that as well. If you need more information than the columns on the web and your newspaper can provide, I recommend you talk to a professional astrologer. In addition to offering personal consultations, I also have two astrological reports for your personal year.

For the past few years, I have written rather long annual horoscopes for the year, which is once again a theme. Remember I am generalizing because the write-ups are intended for the millions who share your Sun sign, an astrologer can get more specific about your life once your date of birth, time of birth and location of birth are known.

Special Report Offer January 10 - February 29, 2008
