Notes - Venus Occultation/Transit

The dates and astrological/astronomical phenomena

• Venus in Gemini April 3 - August 7, 2004 - 126 days - norm 3 weeks
• Venus Retrograde Station May 17 at 16:29 PDT at 26° Gemini 08'
Note: Repeats from May 1996

• Venus Inferior conjunction June 8, 2004 - 1:43 PDT 17° Gemini 53'
• Venus Occultation: June 8, 2004 - astronomically called transits. When transits of Venus occur, they occur in pairs separated by 8 years. The last set of Venus transits occurred in December 1874 and December 1882 in Sagittarius.
• The transit takes place June 7 22:21 PDT - June 8 - 4:16 PDT.
• Note Sunrise 5:14 PDT - This one in Gemini repeats Repeats from June 6, 1761 (the pair transit was June 3, 1769)

• Venus stations direct June 29 at 16:16 PDT after 43 days - 9°Gemini 38'.
The Venus retrograde period is given as 40 days on average, but there are variances.

- Venus is visible as the evening star until June 2, 2004 when it becomes too close to the Sun for observation.
- Venus in Gemini April 3 - August 7, 2004 - 126 days - norm 3 weeks
- Venus Retrograde Station May 17 at 16:29 PDT at 26° Gemini 08'
- Note: Repeats from May 1996
- Venus Inferior conjunction June 8, 2004 - 1:43 PDT 17° Gemini 53'
- Venus Occultation: June 8, 2004 (June 7 22:21 PDT - June 8 - 4:16 PDT - Note: Sunrise 5:14 PDT)
- Occultation repeats from June 6, 1761 (the pair June 3, 1769)
- Venus rises hidden by Sun June 8-15
- Venus is visible as morning star starting June 15

- Note astrologically we determine Venus either as the morning or evening star based on the longitudinal position. When Venus is at an earlier degree than the Sun, she is the morning star i.e. Sun at 18°Gemini and Venus at 17°Gemini. Until June 8 the longitude of Venus is at a later degree than that of the Sun.

- Venus is combust the Sun from when the separation is less 8°30'. Cazimi within 17' and under Sun beams within 17°.

- Astronomy refers to these as transits. In the 18th century these transits allowed astronomers to determine the distance between Sun and Earth with accuracy. The astronomical unit AU was born in 1761, when astronomers travelled to various places on the Earth to observe the event. [Using Venus was apparently a suggestion of Edmond Halley's (1656-1742), who did not experience a Venus transit in his lifetime. Johannes Kepler had suggested using Mercury (we had a Mercury transit last year).]

- These transits occur in pairs at the Nodes of Venus at intervals of eight years. The time lapse between the second transit in the pair and the first transit of the next cycle is 121.5 years the same duration represents a complete cycle of Venus retrograde periods within a zodiacal sign.

- The last set of transits occurred in December 1874 and December 1882.
- The next transit occurs on June 8, 2004
- The transit will start at about 05h 21m GMT
- Venus will take 20 minutes to cross the limb of the Sun.
- Mid-transit will be at 08h 23m GMT.
- Venus will again take 20 minutes to cross the limb of Sun
- The transit will end at 11h 16m GMT
- The duration of the transit will be about 6 hours.
- Another transit will occur on June 5, 2012, starting at approximately 5 PM EST and lasting until about midnight.

- There have been 52 transits of Venus across the Sun between 2000 BCE and 1882 CE. The first one recorded by astronomers was in 1639 CE.
- The Occultations occur in Gemini and Sagittarius. The Nodes of Venus are currently at approx. 16° 42' Gemini-Sagittarius. An occultation is like an eclipse, which means that they have to occur in close proximity with the nodes. Venus is at 17°53' on June 8, which is within 49' of her node position.

- Venus stations direct (9° Gemini 38') June 29 at 16:16 PDT after 43 days. The Venus retrograde period is given as 40 days on average, but there are variances. The previous Venus retrograde period in Scorpio in 2002 lasted 42 days.
