December 2005 Venus entered Aquarius; today she is at 14°Aquarius. Obviously, she was retrograde some time between now and then — she travels through a sign in 24 days as a rule. She does do that once every 18 months. The cycle is split into a nine-month phase as a Morning Star and nine-month phase as an Evening Star. In between, we have a forty-day infertile period. The cycle is rather neatly 9 months plus 20 days retrograde in each phase. Venus has the most symmetric circular motion around the Sun. Her full cycle is 584 days.
January 13, 2005 Venus had her inferior conjunction with the Sun at 23°Capricorn 40'; she was retrograde at the time. I have chosen to call this the New Venus. Something is seeded at this time that will come to 'culmination' four years later at the same date. However, do not think in terms of the exact dates; rather about 13 days before and 13 days after the date. Do think in terms of “this degree position makes a powerful connection in my natal chart, and is further resonated by the progressions.” In the latter part of 2005 and the early part of 2006, that degree was repeated by several cycles between different planets. A transit from Venus in direct motion is not as potent, as when we have a dance between two planets. This time we had Venus and Mercury form connections at this specific degree.
In 2009, we will have Venus conjunct the Sun at 23°Capricorn while she is direct on the 13th of January. Precision is her middle name. I call this one the Full Venus because at this time, her full surface is illuminated by the light of the Sun, and she begins her Evening Star phase. During this phase, she is bigger and more brilliant than as a Morning Star. So as you may have gathered Venus is in her Morning Star phase now, which I liken to her rulership of Taurus—her materialistic nature is more evident now. We paint verbal caricatures to illustrate the basic essence, and the song made famous by Marilyn Monroe "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" comes to mind. Love is elusive and not always ever-lasting, but those precious stones keep on going up in value.
Note that Venus will wax to Full in nine months, and during those nine months we need to work on materializing our new-found goals and aspirations; for some of us the beginning of a new cycle in Capricorn resonates with building more solid foundations for our life. We had many an insight as to what that might be in the course of the four months when Venus performed her slow dance. On the popular tabloid scene, note how many older women want a child now. Perhaps a few reluctant mothers are in the mix, the ones who thought career was more important. Venus in Capricorn is extremely fertile but she is also descriptive of the classic beauty maturing into her skin.
That Full Venus arrives October 27, 2006 at 4°Scorpio11', which means that four years prior we had a New Venus at that degree—same date in 2002. What did you begin then? Is 4° an important one in your chart? I have my Sun close to it at 5° Scorpio, and I traveled to Australia after having been away for 22 years. Apart from wonderful reconnections with family and friends, I became acutely aware of how I desired to change my vocation. In terms of events, I also launched a new column in a newspaper at that time. This year for the Full Venus, I will be at SOTA launching my book, Venus: Her Cycles, Myths and Symbols and delivering a lecture on Venus.
The cycles of New and Full Venus repeat every eight years. Thus, the previous New Venus in Capricorn took place in 1990, 1998 and there was a Full Venus in Capricorn in 1994 and 2002. The previous New Venus in Scorpio took place in 1998 and repeats in 2010. The previous Full Venus in Scorpio took place in 1994 and repeats one more time in 2010. The other three zodiacal signs are Aries Gemini, and Leo. The Venus cycles move back in the course of a century making 13 New and Full Venus conjunctions before moving to the previous sign.
If you plot the cycles in your chart, you will note significant shifts in your life; not all the cycles click in your chart but when they do, it is a memorable change. In the predictive class I teach this year we chose Pitt, Jolie and Aniston as our study. Pitt has Venus at 23°Capricorn in his natal chart, and at age 42, his is becoming a dad for the first time. Venus rules his 11 th house and he adopted Angelina's children—the 11 th house represents adopted children. This is a huge—unfortunately very public—shift in his life. Chances are that back in 2002 and in 1998, the issue of having children became a prominent one for him. His Venus is in his second house, and during this time in 2005-06, he bought out Aniston's share in the production company the two set up.
When the Full phase begins the Evening Star phase at the end of October 2006, we enter a period where the Libran side of Venus emerges. The Evening Star phase is more about doing for others, learning to accommodate and share. This also applies to your natal Venus phase, which can be broken down to eight phases, just like the lunation cycle. If Venus rises after the Sun, she is an Evening Star. Simply turn your chart so that the Sun is at the ASC position to gauge whether you were born with an Evening or a Morning Star Venus. Think in terms of Taurus qualities for the Morning Star and Libran qualities for the Evening Star. I see my role as an author and a teacher as one to show how to think it out, rather than spell it out. I hope to see many of you at my talk on Venus at SOTA.
