The significant shifts in planetary energy began during the past four months, and we have many more to come. 2007 was a challenging year for many of us. When long cycles reach the final degrees in a sign, we feel a sense of urgency to complete EVERYTHING on our list. This naturally isn't doable, no matter how much we would like to conclude everything. In the last six-seven weeks of 2007, most of us became too busy to attend to everything, and that, which entered our lives since September, was emotional in nature and now we needed to learn practical ways of handling issues. In astrology, there are short cycles and extremely long ones—many are changing now, and the more changes we have in the stars the more changes we will have in our lives. Is it a curse or a blessing, when we are wished: "may you live in interesting times"?
Since September 2007, we have all felt 'stuck' somehow. Our experiences are all unique and different. Some of the potential events and issues, including dealing with family members and housing related issues more. Perhaps we have needed to rely on assistance more than we are accustomed. Organizing a trip, procuring insurance, dealing with an insurance claim or the loss of a family member are some of the issues that figure prominently now. Some of us are luckier, and we have only had to deal with the furnace seizing up on us, the hot water heater that no longer works, the washer and dryer, the fridge—anything that has a motor and deals with water.
Mars is retrograde in Gemini as the New Year begins. It is regressing (going back in time…) in the area of your chart associated with career, work and reputation. Have you taken on too many things? Did you over commit by taking on too many obligations and responsibilities? When planets move against the norm, the issues they represent are 'in our face'. What trivial details do you handle that could be delegated?
Many of us have made statements such as 'I no longer want to do that or I REFUSE. This energy can be over reactive, meaning that we get upset over little things that aren't worth the effort of losing our control. Until early March, we have the opportunity to find intellectual, rational, logical choices to set on a different course through the maze of life. During January, we need to revisit past ideas, talk to family and familiar people and to reconnect with the past, but this time with an intellectual mindset.
Similar energy was in play from August 6 to September 28, 2007. The repeats typically take place once every two years; this period is an exception. The feelings we have been having for the past 2-3 months need to be addressed. If something is making you feel unhappy, emotionally alone or alienated, you need to speak up. There is that saying: Doing the same thing 'over and over again' and expecting the same results is insanity. Until March 4, you have the opportunity to revisit those issues and tackle them differently.
As the year begins, a new element enters the equation: logic, paper work, seeking professional advice, speaking to a counselor, attorney, adjuster, etc. The first two weeks of the year are intense, it is easier to get into arguments as we 'fight' for what is just and fair. On December 18 when Jupiter moved into Capricorn (Mercury and Sun followed by the 21 st ) we all got a glimpse of what direction we need to take. Granted most of us became aware that it will take time, patience and working toward our goals patiently and methodically.
Then from March 4 until May 9, you will be able to redesign your plans and goals and head in a direction that you desire the most. This time with more realistic expectations not based on emotional need alone.
Pluto of change and transformation enters the area of your chart associated with romance, children and creativity—all those things we keep in our hearts. The preview period is January 25-June 13, and November 2008 begins 14-year main feature. You might not know what needs to change, but do know that things are not to your liking. Over the past dozen years your relationships with family members, definition of home, and understanding of who you are at your core has undergone subtle, yet profound changes. You take life as a whole more seriously, life is short and you plan to live it rather than settle for observing. Now Pluto of change, elimination, rebirth and 'fate' is shifting gradually into the sign of business, societal norms and ambition, Capricorn (dates above). If we observe, what people are busy doing every year this time we get strong clues as to what the planetary influence is most likely to bring us.
Every year when many planets are in Capricorn (Dec 21-Jan 20), people seem to do a big purge around their homes—in with the new at Christmas and out with the old after Boxing Day. When the planet known for its ability to eliminate, to make redundant moves in Capricorn, purging things and people, who have outlived their usefulness can become a strong theme. Some of the people for Virgo include lover and children, which mean that you could be making dramatic changes on that front. You demand commitment with more intensity than in the past—it is all or nothing! During 2008, Jupiter of abundance is in Capricorn with Pluto, which emphasizes your desire to get more out of your romantic relationship as well as your relationship with your children. Maybe you now want children, something that wasn't important to you before. You could discover innate, latent creative talents and begin to live a more fulfilling life.
Saturn moved into your sign back in September. This implies that you may have more obligations, responsibilities and might need to work harder. This influence can limit what we think we are able to do and accomplish, thus causing depression. Growing up and assuming full responsibility for our own actions takes place over the course of a lifetime. The older we are the more readily we assume that 'burden'. Over the next couple of years, you are likely to be more serious and 'down to business'. This influence can be a timer for the emergency of chronic health issues, and the need to work on getting these 'sorted out'. Some of us choose this time to commit to a relationship others find that they are now responsible for another; needing to be of service and assistance. Pay extra attention to your diet during these years. Out there in the bigger world, conversations and actions toward improving dietary recommendations and quality of our food make headlines. For you this is personal, you already check the expiry dates, and perhaps now you start reading the list of ingredients and make changes in your shopping and eating habits.
This year the Mercury cycle is in the element of air, as in 2001-02. For you, these cycles influence relating at a variety of levels. The emotional theme of 2006-07 gives way to handling matters more rationally. This approach 'feels' more comfortable to you. It is also a year of new ideas and we can have a delightful time playing out those 'what if' and 'why not' scenarios.
For Virgo, Mercury is the ruling planet. This means that you feel the phenomena more acutely than most. This year Mercury is in your own sign for only 19 days in August (10-29), but spends 204 days in signs associated with work and money. This naturally means 2008 is a year you can get ahead in practical matters. You need to tackle issues with logic and be rational. The beauty is that You do think about these matters this way, rather naturally. During the retrograde periods (dates below) pay extra attention to expenses, income and all documentation related to money.
During the time Mercury is in Aquarius (Jan 7 - March 14) This for you brings on a busy time with work, chores and extra tasks to add to your already full schedule. Seek advice, learn how to delegate better and maybe you could make your space—the one where you spend the bulk of those daylight hours—more harmonious, pleasing, etc., perhaps you should play nice music and de-clutter your surroundings. Your advice is a hot commodity now. You might be called to mediate, negotiate or perhaps be put in charge of co-workers, head the committee, etc. If it's been ages since you visited your physician, dentist, etc., now might be the perfect time to rectify that oversight. In good health?—are you getting enough exercise, vitamins, rest…
From May 2 to July 10, career matters, dealings with the boss, parent and similar authority figures are 'front and centre'. What perfect energy, if you need to plan your business activities for the year. If filing tax returns and similar important documents, falls during this period for you, make sure, you are not taking any (illegal) short cuts or fabricating receipts/expenses, etc. This is a wonderful time to figure out new ways of handling issues. Do present your ideas rather than vent to someone who cannot put your innovative (timesaving, more efficient) ideations to good use. During the retrograde period (dates below), pay extra attention to details, correct wording and be patient when discussing issues with superiors and/or those who pay for your services.
During May, you can be more 'reckless' about things in general. You might take risks without considering the outcome from different angles, or you might tell the boss exactly what you think without mincing your words or saying it without much tact or diplomacy. If this is something you've wanted anyway, it can feel rather liberating.
From Aug 28 - Nov 4, Mercury is in Libra, which for you is associated with money, time and resources. During September, you may throw caution to the wind and be less cautious with your money. Keep receipts safe, as you are more likely to change your mind about those recent acquisitions at the end of the month and in early June. During this time, you are more likely to come up with new ideas for making money (as well as things to spend it on). It is all too easy, to take on more than you can comfortably handle now. Try to choose wisely, before putting your hand up to 'volunteer'. Perhaps you need to solicit help and advice from family prior to making new commitments.
September has some spectacular planetary alignments, which for Virgo are associated with money, personal earning capability and priorities. This could spell extra money, more support for your 'cause' and perhaps meeting someone who shares your core values.

Responsibility is your middle name now. With Saturn of obligations and limitations in your sign, you may feel less than enthusiastic at times, but in final analysis, you have two years of accomplishments ahead of you. Handling practical matters logically, methodically and finding fresh ideas/advice to deal with money, work and career; and then doing the required work is 'part and parcel' of the New Year. Romance, children and creative endeavours become a huge issue this year (and what is begun now stays with your for years). This might be a good year for taking calculated risks with business ventures and the like.
