This
is one the tools astrologers use to look at a chart - it's kind of a cheat
sheet, which helps understand the relationship between planets, houses and
signs. It shows the rulerships, and the basic lay-out of an astrological chart.
A modern Flat Chart has Aries on the Ascendant point. Remember that all ancient astrology was written to a Scorpio on the Ascendant Chart, some of the statements we still use in astrology are derived from that old system. The old system is sometimes related to the four faces of God in their divine state of being. Every birth into the world is related to Aries on the Ascendant as Aries represents the beginning, birth, spring and the initiation of starts (beginnings). A simple concept that could be meditated upon for a few life times. However, here we will look at the modern divisions of houses and signs. Both rulerships modern and traditional are shownin the charts.
Some astrologers consider the modern rulers only, some look at the traditional
and some at both. The order of the astrological signs is Aries, Taurus, Gemini,
Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
The flat chart is divided into 12 equal size segments of 30° each. The
signs are divided into four elements, namely Fire, Earth, Air and Water. These
are sometimes referred to as quadruplicities as it divides the 12 into 4 types,
3 signs each. The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs
are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
The signs are further divided into modalities, modes or triplicities. There are three types under this category cardinal, fixed and mutable and each has four signs grouped under a mode. The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The signs occupy the angular houses, the angular houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th.
The ancient rulers, in a tilted format so you can visualize the parallels of rulership. Mercury on either side of the luminaries. Venus next to Mercury on both sides - etc. Kind of logical...
These houses are often also referred to as the cardinal houses, which actually is the term for signs. The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius which on the flat chart occupy the succeedent (following) houses. The succeedent houses are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th. These are sometimes referred to as the fixed houses. The mutable (sometimes changeable) signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. These signs on the flat chart occupy the cadent houses. The word cadent means means falling (from the angles). These houses are also referred to as the mutable houses. Even the term houses which is used by modern astrologers has a variety of terms applied to them ranging from places to domiciles to rooms. When we look up in the sky the houses dont appear anywhere. The MC or midheaven or what is above (in the flat chart the 10th house cusp) is the astrological sign that was directly above at the time of birth. This is the direction of South. The Ascendant is the astrological sign that was rising at the moment of birth and it is the direction of East. The Descendant, the 7th cusp, is West and the IC, imum coeli is North. At sunrise the Sun sign is the same as the sign on the Ascendant, and for someone born at sunrise or shortly thereafter the Sun is in the 12th house prior to sunrise the Sun is in the 1st. At noon we find the Sun on the Midheaven, and Sunrise on the Descendant or into the 6th. At midnight we find the Sun on the IC. The ASC-DESC axis represents the horizon. The MC-IC axis is the Meridian. Copyright Anne Massey 2001.
