SaturnThe symbols that represent the planets and the signs are laden with meaning and symbolism. Look at the one for Uranus in the left hand corner of the graphic. Its grounding is the infinite circle. Circles represent completeness, unity and wholeness. The cross of matter rests upside down on the circle. Crosses represent our connection with earth, our burdens to bear and our gifts to receive. They are also connected to the holy trinity - the son, the father and the holy ghost. The first two parts look like Venus upside down. The crescent is another common component of the symbols astrology uses for the planets and signs. The crescents are symbols of receptivity. In the glyph for Uranus these crescents are pointed outward as if they were radar dishes pointed toward the sound of the spheres.

The radar like symbol for Uranus with the cross of the matter pointed toward the heavens with its receptive ‘ears' looks as if it could receive radio waves, transmit information and perhaps we can even get a glimpse of why it is associated with ‘celestial hearing'.

Uranus is associated with lightning, awakening and all things new and radical. The statue poised on the side of the building sounding his trumpet to herald in a new era is the image that prompted me to write about Uranus entering Pisces. A wake up call - something new and exciting is upon us, despite the unpredictable and not so inspiring activity in the World of Men.

Air is the element that does not hinder the motion of objects through it. Uranus just spent 7+ years in its modern day home of Aquarius. (January 13 1996 - March 10, 2003). Uranus will spend another 3.5 months in Aquarius from September 16 until New Years Eve 2003. One more kick at the can coming up and the events and themes associated will repeat from the early months of 2003.

Uranus is electrifying energy, associated with the intellect, inventions, innovation and original ideas. Unique, individualistic and freedom loving, it is energy that is difficult to tie down or capture. I like to think of it as the filament inside an ordinary light bulb it only takes a thread to conduct electricity to those wires, and voila there is light. In cartoons when someone has an idea, it is often expressed by drawing a light bulb over there heads. Uranus represents that ‘Eureka - I have found it" energy.

What will we discover in Pisces cannot be defined with precision, at best I'd call it educated guesses, remember the essence of Uranus is defined by the word unpredictable.

The 11th house, Aquarius and Uranus are associated with the collective mind, our dreams and wishes for humanity as a whole. The symbolism of Uranus includes groups, associations, friends, and colleagues; humanitarian efforts, legislation, parliament, rebellion, socialism, psychotherapy and science. The image on the cover of the January 20, 2003 issue of the TIME magazine captured my attention, as did its contents. A woman sitting in lotus position of yoga. Whenever the topic is covered in this magazine, which celebrates its 60th anniversary, it has entered the mainstream. One of the articles was about whether Freud could find employment. I found it fascinating in light of what I associate the ingress of Uranus into Pisces in view of the 1920's when this occurred the last time. Freud and Jung became mainstream back then, but in the course of the past 84 years now our views of the human mind have changed. (see 2003 column). This era will likely herald a new kind of psychology, perhaps its roots traced back to the earliest of traditions in astrology. The same edition of the magazine was brimming with articles to do with our health, our mind and genetics. Gene isolation is not the quest rather understanding the combination of genes and environment. Much like astrology, just because you are a Leo Sun, does not mean that you fit the mould. Astrologers look at a myriad of combinations of planetary influences, points and signs to draw any kind of conclusions.

Astrologically speaking, Uranus is energy that livens up our lives by presenting us with unexpected surprises. Mid-life crises is associated with the Uranus return at around age 42, and depending how well your chart is wired to this Maverick planet helps identify the impact of this transit. I think that the role of Uranus is to shake up areas of our lives where we have let life stagnate, where we haven't attempted to do anything closely resembling unique.

Aquarius and its ruler Uranus are associated with the 11th house of hopes, wishes, dreams, friends and acquaintances as well as love given. On a mundane level we associate this house with groups and organizations, thus with charity and assistance to help the masses. We associate Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius with divorce. Both the sign and its ruling planet love their freedom, and both refuse to be bound to something that has stagnated. This sign is intellectual and analytical, it needs the camaraderie and friendship within a relationships. It thrives on mental stimulation, and should that end for any reason, Aquarius is likely to want to find a new source of ‘excitement'. Do pay attention to the subtler tones of the word divorce - it is disassociation from an emotional or committed attachment to not only people but ideas, jobs, groups and all kinds of issues and people we ‘collect' into our lives.

The inventions, advancements in technology while Uranus was in Aquarius as well as the social unrest of this time period have left their mark in history. However, often when a planet travels through the final degrees of a sign, an element of "it is now or never " enters the equation. We could be witnessing some of the most unexpected developments in these Aquarian areas in these final seven weeks, and in the course of the 15 weeks at the end of 2003. But let's keep in mind the big buzz word for Uranus is surprise and the unexpected. One intriguing news item in the papers - the sounds of the genes made in to music. A french composer has made 10 sound tracks of the genes for the genome project. Not the music of the spheres but the sounds our bodies resonate to. Uranus moves into Pisces

On March 10, 2003 Uranus entered Pisces. Previously Uranus was in Pisces from January 1920 - April 1927. It was a time of conservatism. It was a time of great social change. From the world of fashion to the world to politics, forces clashed to produce the most explosive decade of the century. In music, the three sounds were jazz, jazz, and jazz. Youth ruled everything, from the young styles of dress to the latest celebrities. If it was young, it was the thing.

What happened in 1920's?

Over the first few years of the 1920s, the automobile became a hit. Commercial radio broadcasts and movies with sound made a debut. The airplane quickly became an integrated part of American business during the 1920s. Mahjong was the game of the decade, complete with the appropriate oriental attire. Agatha Christie penned her first Poirot novel. The comedies of Charlie Chaplin were some of the most popular.

Medical discoveries in the 20s include:

• Discovery of thyroxin, adrenaline, acetylcholine

• Discovery and therapeutic use of insulin

• inoculation against TB

• Discovery of the iron lung

• Development of a technique for freeze-drying tissues

• Development of antitoxin for scarlet fever

Freud made the words "repression," "sublimation," and "complex" a regular part of our vocabulary. Carl Jung's personality types became very popular game as people calculated the personalities of others - especially celebrities - based on 40 simple questions. First TV-BROADCAST test, pictures transmitted via wire, the start of electronic communication and many broadcasting companies. The first Miss America was chosen in 1921. Jekyll and Hyde a 1920 silent movie. What a decade! To view a list of events click on this link http://mediahistory.umn.edu/time/1920s.html

Will history repeat itself?

Alignments from the 1920's are not repeating, only the fact that Uranus was in the sign of Pisces. In the decades since the 20's the inventions and trends have changed and shifted. Psychology and the media in terms of movies and entertainment are issues associated with Pisces. Medicine is partially under the auspices of Pisces and the discoveries of the 20s significant. Undoubtedly we can expect more along these lines in the next 7 years.

The domain of Neptune, Pisces and the 12th house encompasses issues ranging from saving the world to unions that bargain on behalf of the many. Hospitals, institutions, the psyche, faith, dreams, illusions and hidden, ‘behind the scenes' politics. Uranus on the other hand is responsible not just for ‘Eureka' but all things sudden and unexpected. Therein lies the problem of predicting what. How can it be unexpected if we emphatically know what it is. It would not be a surprise or a shock if we could see it coming. That after all defines the innate nature of Uranus.

So learn to expect the unexpected in the Piscean realm, watch for the associated topics dominate the head lines, and read the paper and watch the news with care on the day the shift occurs - March 10 - as it typically offers the most clues. We all ‘predict' - join the ranks.

One topic I see dominating very clearly over the next seven years is cloning. Not just replicating a life form, which is probably a reality as I write this, but growing a new liver, kidney, other organs and maybe even body parts from healthy cells.

Uranus and Neptune are in mutual reception throughout Uranus' stay in the sign of Pisces. Neptune moves into Pisces in April 2011 a few weeks after Uranus moves into Aries in March 2011. When two planets are in mutual reception they are in effect in their own sign at that specific degree, so from that perspective Uranus does not leave Aquarius. Mutual receptions are strong, but for the reception to be true the two planets need to form a Ptolemaic aspect (60, 90, 120 and 180). Outside of the semantics, let's just keep on calling it a reception, as these two will be occupying each others space and will be in ‘harmony' with sharing what they gather and represent.

This is potent energy, as both these energies are free to take the best of both worlds, so to speak. The dreams and visions we can have with Neptune in Pisces and the incredible discoveries while Uranus disposes Neptune occupying his own sign. I for one am going to watch the events of 2003-2010 with awe, thrilled that I get experience these exciting times. Maybe these will be known as the roaring noughts, no-one has yet named this decade we are living, or is it that the decade hasn't defined itself yet? An interesting conundrum, isn't it.

Fashions repeat themes, which has me wondering if the sleek hairstyles of the 1920's make a modernized comeback, and what happened to the bobby-pin hair waves? Will it be fashionable once again to be flat-chested, even if it means uncomfortable strapping?

Uranus is called the higher octave of Mercury, which represents the mind and logic. Uranus would rule our collective mind and collective logic. Those intuitive thoughts and words we hear are our connection to the collective consciousness. Pisces we acknowledge as the realm of the subconscious or super-conscious. These two concepts have started to blend and meld (yeah that mind-meld of the star trek era), only to show that we are more tuned into to the collective than we used to be. We have learned to realize that humanity includes all of us, and for the next 7 years we get to tune in to the music of the spheres. As a part of the genome project a french composer recorded a CD containing 10 sound tracks on the sounds of our genes. Did anyone imagine 84 years ago that music and sound resonated to our bodies, not just to make us dance but to make us well. Over the years I have heard recordings of sounds from space, we have heard of experiments of playing music to unborn children or even talking to them. I expect remarkable advances in the area of sound and sound therapy. If wearing red colour makes us more energetic imagine if there is a sound for red that can be played to us when our energy levels plummet.

On a more materialistic level we are likely to see the popularization of vehicles, which use an alternate fuel source. Neptune represents oil and water and Uranus electricity. The hybrid car has already been invented and it is becoming popular, despite its cost, with ‘engineering' types, you know the ones that do their research before buying (astrology lumps them into the general box marked Virgo).

What follows Uranus in Pisces is Neptune in Pisces, which starts in 2011 and lasts approx. 15 years (2026). Neptune in Pisces is likely to be dissolution, and we will get a sense of that while the mutual reception is in force. Leading up to the next big shift we need to become ready for it. The planetary cycles are predictable, but giving words to all of the potential outcomes in the interim is not within the realm of the possible.

However, in the next seven years we get to experience a new level of consciousness, the once mystical occult knowledge becomes more mainstream, many of the current astrologers, including yours truly, have the propensity to attempt to demystify this knowledge. Undoubtedly many psychics are doing the very same with their work. Alternate healing will likely become something practiced by traditional health-care workers, as we learn to understand this connectivity we share with life on Earth.

The symbol for Uranus looks like a transmitter or an antennae, with two arched disks on either side. It is often referred to as the higher octave of Mercury. Mercury is about learning, communication, logic and reason. If we take these concepts to the next level, can we perceive hearing sounds that aren't quite of this Earth, kind of like the psychics we are in awe of; who a simply tuned in to these higher frequencies.

If you can imagine it you can manifest is a well know axiom among people who study the occult. Remember some years ago a movie came out called the Frequency? In it communication took place between someone living now and someone who had died years earlier over a ham radio. Someone imagined that or did they? Could that become the realm. I could not imagine as a child of having instant communication with people across the globe from the comfort of my office - and we have had that for years. We are all able to reach further than people who lived in the 1920's when communication and travel to a distance was in its infancy.

We can now open our web-browser and explore the views of hundreds of people on the topic of astrology for example. Look at our world now. What is always guaranteed is that change is inevitable, our choice is to embrace or to resist. © Anne Massey March 2003
